Reference: Marketing What You Bought

Sponsored By: ProQuest, SAGE Reference, Gale Cengage Learning, EBSCO Publishing & Library Journal.

Date & Time: Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EST/10:00 AM - 11:00 AM PST.

Description: At Library Journal’s midwinter reference roundtable, academic and public librarians expressed frustration that they don’t know how to best market the often-expensive materials they’ve bought from reference publishers and aggregators. SAGE Reference’s Rolf Janke quoted librarians as saying, “Help us market your content…We’re not in business. We don’t have marketing degrees.” At the same time, EBSCO’s Brian Duncan explained that something as simple as radio advertising has caused spikes in usage for libraries. Our participants will explain how to best market content to patrons so that material will fly off the real or virtual shelves.

Attendees will get workable plans and concrete examples of marketing strategies that have worked in various settings and with various sized patron populations. We’ll also hear from two librarians about what’s worked from them and what they need from vendors going forward.

Presenters:
·        Sara Groves - Marketing and Communication coordinator, Montana State Library.
·        Christine Sharbrough- Librarian, Derry Public Library (NH).
·        Maria Ziemer - Manager, Graduate Education Program, ProQuest.
·        Rolf A. Janke - Founder and Vice President, Sage Reference.
·        Chris Posa- Marketing Manager, Gale Cengage Learning.
·        Scott Bernier - Vice President of Marketing, EBCSO Publishing.

Understanding Compassion Fatigue in Your Library

Date & Time: Thursday, May 31, 2012 2:00 pm
Eastern Daylight Time (New York, GMT-04:00).

But there are days when you’ve given just about all you have to give. At the end of the day you feel drained, or irritated, or both! You may have achieved "compassion fatigue." The term, which is used frequently in medical settings, describes a caregiver’s reaction to chronic stress that results in feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, self-doubt, lack of focus and fatigue. This webinar will help you recognize the symptoms and the situations that may trigger compassion fatigue and understand how it affects you and your working environment. Explore ways to take care of yourself so you can continue to show compassion and give your patrons the care they need.

Presenter: Linda Bruno, trainer and facilitator, www.LindasWorkshops.com, Ocala, Florida.
