Date & Time: August 25th, 2017 12:00 PM.

Presenters:

* Suzanne Flint: Library Programs Consultant, California State Library.

* Chris Boggiano: VersaMe, Inc.

Description: Please note: This webinar relates to a California State Library grant project. It will be of interest primarily to California public libraries.

As part of the California State Library’s 2017/18 ELF grant, five library jurisdictions will be selected from a mix of rural, suburban, and urban locales to receive a supply of Starlings – a wearable tech device – as well as staff training and support to pilot various approaches to sharing and/or loaning the devices to families. This webinar will provide an overview about this pilot Starling project and explain the process for how your library jurisdiction can apply to be one of the five pilot libraries.

Words Matter: Libraries understand the power of words to help develop young minds, and they’ve been encouraging parents to talk, read and sing to their children for some time. Now the Starling can help reinforce these efforts! In this age of busy lives and smartphones, most children aren’t getting the exposure to words they need to reach their full potential. With the Starling, parents can SEE the power of their words. Libraries all over the country have discovered the Starling as a powerful new parent support tool that can show parents they truly are their child’s first teacher.

What is the Starling: The Starling is a wearable word counter that picks up vocal sound waves (without recording), and parses out the number of words a child is hearing. Those numbers are instantly updated on a parent’s smartphone app, and on their library’s Starling Dashboard. It can: Demonstrate to parents the power of words, and inspire them to sustain and expand their early learning and literacy efforts, and Scaffold your parenting community’s focus on talking, reading and singing.

Come join us to explore the possibilities for sharing and loaning these devices with your families!

Description: Earlier this year, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) launched a series of Global Vision discussions to bring together thousands of librarians around the world, through face-to-face and online interactive participation, to explore how a connected library field can meet the challenges of the future. IFLA believes that the challenges facing the library field from ever-increasing globalization can only be met and overcome by an inclusive, global response from a united library field. By joining us for this webinar, you can participate in this global discussion to identify future challenges and opportunities facing the library field and help to prioritize actions that a united and connected library field can take.

The Association for Rural and Small Libraries, in collaboration with WebJunction, invites rural and small libraries to join this highly interactive webinar discussion to voice your opinions and contribute to shaping a unique and comprehensive IFLA Global Vision. In preparation, you may want to reflect on your work in the library field: Why do you think your work is important? How do you see your work in the future? You may also refer to IFLA’s Trend Report as well as other relevant publications about libraries and the trends and developments affecting them.

Description: When you hear about censorship in libraries, you may automatically wonder what YA book is under attack this time. However, many of the challenges to intellectual freedom we’re facing go well beyond books. Online resources, speakers and events, programs, and other library initiatives are also coming under fire, and those of us in libraries may not always agree on what should be defended. Please join us for a conversation about today’s threats to intellectual freedom and what you can do to stand up for free expression.
