“MedlinePlus: Power Searching for Hidden Treasures”

Date & Time: August 21st, 2014. Start Time: Pacific - 12 Noon, Mountain - 1 PM, Central - 2 PM, Eastern - 3 PM.

Description: Health Information questions come in a whole range of complexity, from simple requests for a spelling of a medical term to complex requests from someone facing a serious illness.

* Do you feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of resources that might answer the patron’s question?
* Do you feel confident that you can point the patron to the best resource based on their reading ability or language preference?
* Do you ever hesitate to recommend a site because you don’t have the time to properly evaluate the content for accuracy?
* Wouldn't it be great if there were one health information site that combined only the best resources as a trustworthy starting point for just about any scenario?

Lucky for us, MedlinePlus is such a site! This scenario-based training webinar will present a spectrum of sample health reference questions, from simple to more complex examples. The path to the answer or the perfect resource will demonstrate different search techniques for each question. The instructor will also show how to take searches beyond MedlinePlus for users who need information at a higher level. By the time you finish watching the webinar, you will have several new tricks up your sleeve!

At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will:

* Understand of the spectrum of health reference questions that can be answered with MedlinePlus searches
* Be aware of the extensive content in MedlinePlus beyond the basic disease and drug information

“Top Ten Skills for Teaching Tech to Patrons”

Date & Time: 14 August 2014.  2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time, North America [UTC -4].

Description: Opportunities to provide training occur every time you help someone with a technology related question, whether it’s one-on-one assistance or in a classroom environment. Making the most of the “teachable moment” involves the right combination of training skills, techniques, and tactics. Technology training is successful when a library patron learns something new and is able to apply it to their life. You don’t need to be a tech expert to learn the practical skills for successful technology training. Crystal Schimpf will share the top ten skills she’s found most effective in her years of training experience.

This webinar is hosted in collaboration with ALA's Learning Round Table.

Presenter:  Crystal Schimpf, CEO and Learning Facilitator at Kixal

“Recruiting and Training Volunteers for Library Advocacy”

Date & Time: 20 August 2014. 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time, North America [UTC -4].

Description: Like many libraries, Michigan’s Herrick District Library found itself with a leaner staff facing more responsibilities in recent years. The idea of sending employees out of the building to staff community awareness events seemed like a challenging concept. This Michigan library not only developed a volunteer force to meet the challenge, but they now have a sustainable volunteer training and management model to apply in future situations where the library has big dreams but lacks the staffing required to pursue them. Come hear from a Geek the Library shining star, and learn how to engage your community’s volunteer force.

Presenter: Sara DeVries, Marketing & Public Relations Manager, Herrick District Library, Michigan.
