“The Future is now: Rural Library as Innovation Incubator”

Date & Time: Wednesday, December 4, 2013. 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Eastern Standard Time [UTC -5]

Description: With the technology landscape constantly shape-shifting, libraries must respond as futurists to changing patron needs. Learn how to remain relevant, if not core, to your community's needs by providing the means and support for patrons to create and innovate.

Rural and small libraries with limited resources can become community innovation incubators, by providing patrons access to transformative technologies and by providing space for new ideas to be explored. Beyond makerspaces to editing suites and digital learning labs, libraries are empowering and impacting their communities, now and in the future. Bring your own story of library as innovation incubator and learn from others!

This webinar is hosted in collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries

Presenters:

Tameca Beckett, Youth Services Librarian, Laurel Public Library (DE), and

Andrea Berstler, Director at the Wicomico Public Library (MD), who both serve on ARSL's Board of Directors.

“The Power of Transformational Stories”

Date & Time: Tuesday, December 10, 2013. 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Eastern Standard Time [UTC -5]

Description: Communicating about transformation vs. information is a critical component of changing perceptions about the library in your community. Your team transforms lives every day-and these are the stories that will resonate the most.

Presenters:

Nancy Dowd, Senior Manager for NoveList’s LibraryAware, and

Karen Austin, Geek the Library field manager at OCLC, as they discuss how to identify, mold and communicate transformational stories that can help your community understand the value of the library to individuals and the community as a whole.

This webinar is hosted by Geek the Library, a community awareness campaign.

This one-hour webinar is scheduled for 2 p.m. (EST) on December 10. We encourage you to register in advance.

“Extreme Customer Service, Every Time”

Date & Time: Thursday, December 12, 2013. 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Eastern Standard Time [UTC -5]

Description: Commitment to great customer service goes beyond “service with a smile.” It is a commitment to truly engage and communicate with patrons and to find ways to extend the experience above and beyond their expectations. Building on the success of the Darien Library, whose reputation is known internationally for providing “extreme customer service,” presenter Gretchen Caserotti will provide you with practical and actionable ideas that can help your library, whether small or large, commit to excellent customer service.

Presenter: Gretchen Caserotti, director, Meridian Library District (ID), who has served from frontline librarian to policy maker, and was trained at the Darien Library (CT).

“Infopeople Webinars”

“Public Libraries and the Common Core Curriculum: Resources”

Date & Time: Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013. Start Time: Pacific - 12 Noon, Mountain - 1 PM, Central - 2 PM, Eastern - 3 PM

Description:

- Did you know Common Core standards require that, by 12th grade, 70% of student reading be nonfiction?
- Are you looking for ways to strengthen your collection and programming to meet these new needs?
- How can you help students and their parents understand the Common Core standards and find resources related to it?

One of the exciting aspects of the new Common Core standards is their emphasis on nonfiction, which is better than ever for young people. This gives public libraries a great opportunity to highlight their nonfiction holdings and integrate them into programming, booklists, and more. Public libraries can also be instrumental in guiding students and their parents through the maze of information about the standards and what they mean.

During this webinar, participants will learn ways to improve and promote their nonfiction collections, especially in the areas of science and history. The program will review Common Core text complexity guidelines and introduce resources related to the standards.

At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will:

- Be able to identify ways to strengthen nonfiction collections for Common Core
- Be familiar with Common Core text complexity concepts
- Be able to articulate four ways to help parents and their children with the Common Core

This webinar will be of interest to public library staff working with children and Young Adults, literacy staff and volunteers, school librarians, directors, principals, library assistants, library school students, teachers, and reading teachers.

Presenter:  Kathleen Odean

Webinars are free of charge; you can pre-register by clicking on the Registration link. If registering with less than 30 MINUTES from the start of the webinar you can join directly from the thank you page by clicking the Join Now button. If you pre-registered you will receive an email with login link and a reminder email the day before the event.

“Life after Desk: Implementing the New Service Models”

Date & Time: Wednesday, December 4th, 2013. Start Time: Pacific - 12 Noon, Mountain - 1 PM, Central - 2 PM, Eastern - 3 PM

Description:

- Are you wondering how a new service model might work in your library?
- Do you wish you had more information about what it really takes to transition to these new approaches?
- Are you in the middle of implementation and looking for practical tips and suggestions from other libraries?
- Or are you just curious about how library work is changing?

We’ve all heard how progressive libraries are experimenting with new ways to deliver service. Recent years have brought news of shrinking circ desks, roving reference, virtual branches, after-hours lockers, unattended kiosks, information neighborhoods, zone staffing, imbedded librarians, and other service innovations.

In this timely webinar, library consultant and futurist Joan Frye Williams will bring us up to date on how new service models are performing in a variety of settings. She’ll share lessons learned about how to succeed with these new techniques, including practical advice for:

- Training and redeploying staff,
- Revising job descriptions,
- Rearranging library spaces,
- Rethinking library collections,
- Introducing the new model to your community, and
- Measuring success and productivity.

This one-hour webinar will be of interest to library staff at all levels looking to increase their understanding of what’s working well, what still needs tweaking, and what just might be coming our way in the future.

Presenter:  Joan Frye Williams

Webinars are free of charge; you can pre-register by clicking on the Registration link. If registering with less than 30 MINUTES from the start of the webinar you can join directly from the thank you page by clicking the Join Now button. If you pre-registered you will receive an email with login link and a reminder email the day before the event.
