Description:

For public library staff, dealing with the media can sometimes be rewarding, sometimes frustrating, sometimes exciting, sometimes daunting… but always necessary. PLA’s free, hour-long webinar, “Managing Traditional & Social Media for Libraries” covers the fundamentals of media planning and outreach -including social media- to prepare you to work with the media and generate attention that will support your library’s activities and advocacy efforts.

This webinar is an extension of the free PLA advocacy training program,
Turning the Page 2.0.

Learning Outcomes:

At the conclusion of this one-hour webinar, participants will be able to:

• State the importance of media outreach in relationship to advocacy.

• Identify the difference between “traditional media” and “social media”.

• List the six key steps involved in traditional media outreach.

• Identify at least four key concepts to remember when they speak to (“pitch”) the media about their library.

• Recognize at least three keys to success to preparing and delivering a media interview.

• Describe what is Turning the Page 2.0 and how this advocacy planning program can serve as a larger context for your media activities.

Who Should Attend?

• Public librarians new to working with the media or those who would like a refresher.

• Public librarians who participated in Turning the Page 2.0, PLA’s free advocacy training program.

Instructor:

Steve Yacovelli, EdD, owner and principal of TopDog Learning Group LLC, Orlando, Fla., has over twenty years experience in learning and development, including over fourteen-years experience in e-learning management. He has worked with international corporations, national nonprofits, and academic institutions.

He is currently a facilitator for Turning the Page 2.0, PLA’s free advocacy training program and was also a facilitator during the original version of the Turning the Page program.
He first taught this webinar’s content to representatives from libraries in ten different countries around the world as part of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Global Libraries Initiative.

Date & Time:

Thursday, May 31, 2012

• 2:00–3:00 PM Eastern

• 1:00–2:00 PM Central

• 12:00–1:00 PM Mountain

• 11:00 AM–12:00 PM Pacific

Continuing Education Credits:

PLA does not award credit hours, or CEUs, for its webinars and cannot verify participation. Individual registrants who attend the webinar will receive a follow up e-mail that could be used to verify attendance. For those participating as part of a group registration (defined as people gathered in one room at one location to participate in the live webinar broadcast) we recommend assigning a staff member to take attendance on-site if verification of attendance is needed.

Fee:

This webinar is free, but registration is required and space is limited.

Technical Requirements:

This webinar will be presented using the WebEx platform. You may listen to the audio portion of the webinar via your computer's speakers, headphones plugged into your computer's audio jack or USB port; or by dialing in with your telephone (your carrier's charges may apply) or Skype (by following the process outlined by Skype to place calls to land lines). We suggest that groups, especially larger groups, plan ahead to use an LCD/LED projector in the room to project the webinar. Groups will also want to have speakers or a sound system capable of amplifying the webinar audio for the entire room. No microphone is required.

How to Register?

THIS WEBINAR IS FREE, BUT REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED AND SPACE IS LIMITED. Please do not register unless you are sincere about attending the live webinar. Space is limited, and signing up and not attending deprives someone else of the opportunity. Thank you for your cooperation.

Deadline to register is 4:30 PM Central on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, or until space is no longer available, whichever comes first. Due to technical preparations for the webinar we are unable to process any registrations after this date/time.

Yet what do we mean by those words and how do we know if the person meets our definition? What can we do in our libraries to increase the information and digital literacy of our users/patrons/members/owners? How does that impact the tools that we acquire and the services that we provide? Who should we be partnering with in these efforts? These and other questions will be address in this session, which will also include time for brainstorming.

Jill Hurst-Wahl is an associate professor of practice in Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies and the director of its library and information science program. She is a member of SLA’s Board of Directors, NYS Regents Advisory Council on Libraries, and the USNY Technology Policy and Practices Council.
