Presenters: Toby Greenwalt & Amy Koester.

Description: We all know data collecting is important, but what type of data should libraries be collecting? And how should they use the data they collect? Data is both a library tool and a community resource, and libraries can act as data champions within their service areas in order to amplify the reach and impact of library services.
This webinar will explore multiple steps along the library data pathway, from using data for internal analytics, to building institutional and community data literacy, to leveraging data for community and civic engagement. Regardless of where you and your organization are currently with regard to library data, this webinar will provide insight and resources to facilitate your next steps as a data champion.

At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will:

* Recognize tools available to assess current data practice and to train staff, partners, and the public in data literacy.
* Understand data as a literacy that underpins many aspects of library service.
* Leverage data literacy as a tool for civic engagement.

This webinar will be of special interest to: public library staff who would like to learn to use data as both an internal tool and a community resource and to increase data literacy in their organizations

“Laying Out the Welcome Mat: Asset Mapping to Better Serve the Immigrant Community”

Date & Time: 17 July 2018, 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time, North America [UTC -4]

Presenters:

* Heather MacKenzie, Manager, Diversity Services
* Amanda Fullerton, Manager, Eastern Shore & Musquodoboit Valley Library Service
* Kenneth Williment, Branch Manager, Sackville Public Library and Acting Manager, Tantallon and Hubbards

Description: As of 2016, more than 43 million immigrants were living in the US, and that number is growing. Immigration can breathe new life into the local economy as young workers replace retiring baby boomers, open new businesses, and become active consumers. Libraries can ease immigrants’ transition into the community by acting as a resource hub. Asset mapping encourages libraries to go out into their communities and uncover and assess the resources available to immigrants. The information they gather gives the insight libraries need to develop programming to serve these patrons and help them thrive. This webinar will discuss how asset mapping can facilitate community entry for immigrants by helping libraries better understand the needs of this population and address those needs through service and program development.

This webinar is hosted in collaboration with TechSoup for Libraries.
