“Facilitating Multi-Dimensional Listening: Helping Groups Identify Common Ground while Acknowledging Differences”

Presenters: Susan Stuart Clark and Suzanne Flint

Description: Many of us are familiar with the practice of "active listening."  This webinar will help facilitators and discussion leaders further develop their skills to listen beneath the surface of what's being said. You will receive instruction in advanced facilitation concepts supported by examples from fellow librarians. Skill in multi-dimensional listening is particularly relevant in today's society when people can be extra sensitive to identity and position. Learn how to help the entire group listen together more skillfully for clues to where there might be common ground while respecting differences that arise.  Join us to hone your listening and facilitation skills and bring questions from your own experiences.   

This session is hosted by the California State Library, represented by Suzanne Flint. The lead presenter will be Susan Stuart Clark, with case examples curated from California librarians experienced in facilitating multi-dimensional listening.

This webinar will be of interest to: Librarians and library staff who have had experience designing and facilitating group discussions on important issues and are interested in deepening their group process skills.


“What's New in Children’s Literature - 2018”

Description: Join esteemed children’s librarian and author Penny Peck in her yearly review of what’s new in children’s literature. Discover new books published in late 2017 and Spring 2018 that will be popular with children ages 0-12, including books that reflect the diversity of the children we serve! These include board books, picture books, easy readers, transitional fiction, genre fiction for middle grades, graphic novels, poetry, nonfiction, and more! Hear about books that will be popular with a wide audience of children, including recent award-winners. Also, find out about books that fit the 2018 summer reading themes of music and travel.
At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will:

- Learn about new children’s and tween books for various age ranges and reading levels, including very simple new books for those just learning to read.
- Find new books perfect for storytime and to offer parents as read-alouds.
Celebrate new multicultural books to meet the needs of all children – diversity matters!

“Mitigating microaggressions in virtual reference”

Presenter: Marie Radford, Ph.D. Professor and Director, Ph.D. Program, Communication, Information and Library Studies, Rutgers University

Description: Microaggressions are intentional or non-intentional verbal, behavioral and environmental indignities towards marginalized individuals. Microaggressions are subtle, nuanced, and difficult to detect and address, especially in virtual environments. This presentation reports results from qualitative content analysis of a large, longitudinal, random sample of QuestionPoint virtual reference service (VRS) sessions (drawn from 2006, 2010, and 2016). In this time of heightened online conflict, attendees will be provided with research-based examples and guidelines to help them to both recognize microaggressions and to minimize them to enhance service excellence.


“Managing your e-resources and licenses: A demonstration in WorldShare Management Services”

Description:

During this 45-minute demonstration of WorldShare Management Services (WMS), you will learn how WorldShare License Manager brings together the two key features of electronic resource management: (1) knowledge about licenses that govern the subscription and use, and (2) knowledge base and linking technology that connect users to needed content in a single place.

“Expanding discovery and visibility of all your library’s collections: A demonstration of the WMS discovery interface”

Description: During this 45-minute demonstration of WorldCat Discovery Services and how they work with WorldShare Management Services, you will:

- See how you can provide your end users with single-search access to your library’s full array of resources–electronic, print and digital
- Learn how staff and users can choose from integrated delivery options, including linking to full text through built-in link resolution and an A to Z list, linking to your OPAC and requesting items via consortial borrowing systems or interlibrary loan
- Understand how your library can gain more visibility on the Web through OCLC's partnerships with leading search engines and popular sites
- Hear how simple these OCLC services are to configure and maintain, and how they build on OCLC services your library already may use.

“From Information Literate to Information Fluent: The Role of Libraries in Preparing 21st Century Citizens”

Date & Time: Wednesday, February 21, 2018. 2pm Eastern (11am Pacific | 12pm Mountain | 1pm Central).  

Presenter: A first-generation student and a native of London, England, Dr. Alan Bearman holds a Ph.D. in History from Kansas State University, along with undergraduate and Master’s degrees from Murray State University and the University of Kentucky. He is a Professor in the History of Christianity and Early American History at Washburn University where he is also the founding Dean of the combined University Libraries and the Center for Student Success and Retention.

Description: Librarians are increasingly important in helping students, pre-K through 20 and beyond, to move beyond the skills of Information Literacy and become Information Fluent in order to successfully navigate the Knowledge Economy. In this session, Dr. Alan Bearman will discuss how, with the help of a Lyrasis Catalyst Grant, the Washburn University librarians are collaborating with other regional librarians to develop a culture of Information Fluency in their service region.
