Description: Join esteemed children’s librarian and author Penny Peck
in her yearly review of what’s new in children’s literature. Discover new books
published in late 2016 and Spring 2017 that will be popular with children ages
0-12, including books that reflect the diversity of the children we serve!
These include board books, picture books, easy readers, transitional fiction, genre
fiction for middle grades, graphic novels, poetry, nonfiction, and more! Hear
about books that will be popular with a wide audience of children, and
nonfiction and fiction pairings to recommend to teachers implementing the
Common Core. Also, find out about books that fit the 2017 summer reading theme
of building and popular makers’ spaces.
At the end of this one-hour webinar,
participants will:
- Learn about new children’s and tween
books for various age ranges and reading levels, including very simple new
books for those just learning to read.
- Celebrate new multicultural books to
meet the needs of all children – diversity matters!
- Hear about new nonfiction and fiction
pairings, perfect for the Common Core.
Discover books that will grab the
attention of reluctant readers, including the newest graphic novels for kids,
popular series, and books that relate to the 2017 summer learning themes of
“Build a Better World” and “Reading by Design.”

trained to approach their clients with empathy while maintaining professional
boundaries. Whole Person Librarianship draws from social work concepts to help
librarians become more confident in learning from, interacting with, and
serving diverse patrons. Learn basic ideas to build your empathy skills, such
as cultural humility and person-in-environment, to apply right away to your

Foundation (EFF), will talk about digital security issues that
impact patron privacy in public libraries, and will share tools and information
from EFF that can be useful for libraries.
Chuck McAndrew, IT Librarian at the Lebanon Public Libraries (NH), will share actions he has taken at
this small library to better protect patron privacy and to teach library users
(how to better protect their own privacy).

environment for library patrons? How is your library protecting the privacy of
patrons in this digital world? Patron privacy is of critical importance to
libraries, and should be a foundational principle guiding library policy and
practice. It is included in the American Library Association's Code of Ethics
and the Library Bill of Rights. As technology changes rapidly, libraries and
librarians are working hard to keep up with digital security issues to better
protect the privacy of their users. But this is not an easy task.

"I Kanban, Can You? A Librarian's
Introduction to KanbanFlow"

Presenter: Rachel Evans is the web coordinator and digital
media specialist at the University of Georgia Alexander Campbell King Law
Library.
Description: Most librarians and library staff are
constantly multi-tasking. Despite the type of library, our tasks are endless
and can range from cataloging to working the reference desk to IT support and
everything in between. It can be very difficult to organize our to-do lists,
not to mention get things done. This session will introduce the concept of
Kanban (Japanese for "sign" or "billboard"), an important
tool for managing workflow and measuring improvement and outcomes that was
first popularized by the manufacturing industry. Today Kanban is utilized by
software development teams, marketing units, human resource offices, people in
strategy and leadership, and for organizing personal tasks and achieving goals.
This session will also introduce
KanbanFlow, a free online project management tool that digitizes the Kanban
method. This tool supports real-time collaboration between team members and
weaves in the Pomodoro method of time-tracking. A live demo of KanbanFlow, its
various features, and real-life examples of how it can be used in a library
setting will be included to help illustrate the usefulness of this method and
tool for librarians.
